The show, in one paragraph
Worst Ex Ever is a Netflix true-crime docuseries from Blumhouse Television and ITV America, directed by Cynthia Childs with Jason Blum as executive producer. Season 1 premiered August 28, 2024 with four episodes. Each episode follows one real case in which a former partner turned predator, combining survivor testimony, investigator interviews, bodycam and surveillance footage, and 2D animated reenactments.
Episode 1 — Dating the Devil (Benjamin Foster)
In late January 2023, Oregon State Police launched a statewide manhunt for Benjamin Obadiah Foster after he tortured his partner Justine Siemens at her Grants Pass home. Foster had accumulated domestic-violence convictions in multiple states — including a 2019 Nevada conviction for holding another woman captive — before arriving in Oregon. The manhunt ended on January 31, 2023, when Foster was cornered in a Grants Pass crawlspace and shot himself. During the search, two additional homicide victims were discovered; investigators linked both to Foster. Siemens survived. Full coverage: Benjamin Foster — Grants Pass kidnapping and manhunt.
Episode 2 — Betrayed by the Badge (Jerry Ramrattan)
After Seemona Sumasar reported her ex-boyfriend Jerry Ramrattan — a former paid police informant — for rape in 2009, Ramrattan orchestrated a revenge plot that framed her for three armed robberies across Queens. The scheme briefly worked: Sumasar was arrested in December 2010, held at Rikers Island for seven months, and separated from her daughter before investigators traced the witnesses back to Ramrattan. A Queens jury convicted Ramrattan in November 2011 on charges including rape, conspiracy, perjury, witness tampering, and falsely reporting incidents. He was sentenced to 32 years in prison in January 2012. Full coverage: Jerry Ramrattan — 2010 Queens framing of Seemona Sumasar.
Episode 3 — Killing for Custody (Rosa Hill & Mei Li)
In January 2009, during a contested custody dispute between Rosa Hill and her estranged husband Eric Hill, Rosa and her mother Mei Li went to the Dublin, California home of Eric's grandmother, 91-year-old Selma "Sally" Hill. When Eric arrived to check on his grandmother, Mei Li struck him in the head with a baton while Rosa threatened him with a handgun. Selma was killed; her body was hidden in a trash can outside the home. Eric survived. An Alameda County jury convicted both Rosa and Mei Li in 2011 of first-degree murder and attempted premeditated murder. In April 2015, California's Court of Appeal reversed the first-degree murder convictions while leaving the attempted-murder convictions in place. Full coverage: Rosa Hill & Mei Li — Dublin killing of Selma Hill.
Episode 4 — Married to a Monster (Kevin Lewis)
After Amanda Canales's marriage to Kevin Lewis collapsed, Lewis hired a hitman in 2015 to kill her at her Everett, Washington home. Due to a case of mistaken identity, the hitman instead shot and killed Amanda's sister, Alisha Canales-McGuire. A Snohomish County jury convicted Lewis of first-degree murder in 2021. Full coverage: Kevin Lewis — 2015 Everett murder-for-hire.
What Season 1 is about
The season's through-line is less "how did this person become dangerous?" than "how did the systems around them fail to flag the danger?" The Foster case points at interstate tracking of convicted abusers. The Ramrattan case points at institutional impersonation and the weaponization of police procedure. The Hill case points at family court as an escalator. The Lewis case points at the invisibility of single incidents that only become a pattern in aggregate. Each is a specific failure; together they form an argument.
Netflix renewed the series in April 2026; Season 2 arrived on May 6, 2026.
